“I’ve always liked the Chevelle and in convertible trim its sleek lines really come together. Wanting to capture the exhilaration of driving such a powerful car, I needed the right setting. I thought what better place to be with your car than on an open country road with fellow Chevelle owners, in friendly competition, doing what these high performance machines do best."- MICHAEL IRVINE

Introduced to the public on September 26, 1963, the Chevrolet Chevelle offered General Motors customers the greatest list of options available. Showing all competitors that GM was serious about performance, the Super Sport option was added to the lineup in 1964, giving buyers access to a 300hp/327ci motor. As cubic inches became the name of the game, in 1965, GM pushed forward with the introduction of the 350hp/396ci motor.
In 1969, the 396ci L79 engine gave drivers 375 hp, but that still wasn't enough. With the muscle car days in full swing, in 1970 GM unleashed ‘the beast’ — the LS6 454ci Chevelle SS. Putting out 450 hp with 500lbs foot of torque, the Chevelle SS became the fastest production muscle car of the era.
This vibrant painting celebrates the Chevelle Super Sports’ short, powerful run from 1964 to 1973. On this beautiful summer evening, Chevelle owners and enthusiasts gather for an friendly, high spirited game of tire melting and quick acceleration. As the next competitor, a 1967 SS 396 gets ready to take on his opponent, the flags drop and a 1969 Chevelle SS 396 convertible goes head to head with the 1970 LS6 454 convertible — in what’s known in these parts as a ‘drop top show down’.
