“These cars were (and are) all about performance, speed and styling. When I decided to create a painting featuring the Challenger and Cuda, I knew they could not be standing still. I wanted to capture the thrill of competition between the street versions of the famous race cars, while paying tribute to their true origins. What a rush it would have been to, not only be behind the wheel of one of these powerful cars, but have a chance to race another like minded driver."- MICHAEL IRVINE
Warning: Almost Sold Out
In 1970 Trans Am Racing was reaching its peak. Professional drivers like Sam Posey and Dan Gurney wowed spectators with breathtaking skills as they piloted their factory Challenger T/A and AAR Cuda race cars on road courses across America. SCCA rules required a limited number of street version cars be made available to the public … making 1970 a great year for buyers looking for true high performance with race car looks.
There were approximately 2500 Challenger T/As and 2800 AAR Cudas built for the street. You could go into a dealership and order one powered by a 340 cubic inch motor, sporting three 2 barrel carburators (commonly referred to as a ‘six pack’ set up), a factory black fibreglass hood complete with scoop, and side exiting exhaust pipes, all for about $3700. What a tremendous year to buy and drive a brand new Dodge or Plymouth muscle car!
In this striking, dynamic watercolor painting, Michael puts you right in the middle of the exhilarating action as these two drivers experience the thrill of the race, going head-to-head on an open stretch of road. You can almost feel and hear their powerful engines as the Challenger and Cuda tear up the asphalt, their race car heritage reflected in the wet pavement. From the beginning, these muscle cars were 'born to race'!
